Ezekiel Elliott Signs with the New England Patriots

Former Dallas Cowboys Running Back Lands in Foxborough

March 15, 2023, 4:45 PM PDT

The Dallas Cowboys released running back Ezekiel Elliott on Wednesday, March 15, 2023. Elliott, who had been with the Cowboys since 2016, was reportedly released due to salary cap issues and the emergence of Rhamondre Stevenson as the team's lead back.

According to Clarence Hill of the Fort Worth Star-Telegram, the Cowboys will carry a $162 million cap charge as a result of Elliott's release. The move is a significant one for the Cowboys, who have been struggling with salary cap issues in recent years.

Elliott, who rushed for over 1,000 yards in each of his first three seasons with the Cowboys, has seen his production decline in recent years. In 2022, he rushed for just 876 yards and 12 touchdowns in 15 games.

The Patriots, who have been in need of a running back to complement Stevenson, are expected to sign Elliott to a one-year deal worth $6 million. Elliott will likely serve as the Patriots' primary backup running back behind Stevenson.

Elliott's signing is the latest in a series of moves by the Patriots to improve their roster this offseason. The Patriots have also signed wide receiver DeVante Parker, tight end Hunter Henry, and cornerback Jalen Mills.
