NASA Finalizes Crew-9 Mission Assignments
Launch and Mission Details
On July 17, 2024, NASA announced the final crew assignments for the Crew-9 mission, scheduled for launch on September 1, 2024, from the Kennedy Space Center in Florida. Aboard the SpaceX Crew Dragon spacecraft, the four-person crew will spend six months aboard the International Space Station (ISS), conducting scientific research and maintenance tasks.
Crew Members and Roles
Commander: Nicole Mann (NASA)
Nicole Mann, a NASA astronaut, will serve as the commander of Crew-9. This will be her second spaceflight, having previously flown to the ISS on the SpaceX Crew-5 mission in 2023.
Pilot: Koichi Wakata (JAXA)
Koichi Wakata, a veteran astronaut from the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA), will be the pilot of Crew-9. With five previous spaceflights under his belt, Wakata brings extensive experience to the mission.
Mission Specialist 1: Jeanette Epps (NASA)
Jeanette Epps, a NASA astronaut, will serve as a mission specialist on Crew-9. This will be her first spaceflight, and she will be responsible for conducting scientific experiments and operating the ISS's systems.
Mission Specialist 2: Andrey Fedyaev (Roscosmos)
Andrey Fedyaev, a cosmonaut from Russia's Roscosmos space agency, will round out the Crew-9 team as a mission specialist. This will be his second spaceflight, having previously visited the ISS in 2021.
Science Objectives and Crew Training
During their six-month stay on the ISS, Crew-9 will conduct a variety of scientific experiments, including studies on human health, materials science, and Earth observation. The crew will also carry out maintenance and repair tasks to ensure the continued operation of the ISS.
The crew members have been undergoing rigorous training at NASA's Johnson Space Center in Houston, Texas, and at partner facilities around the world. This training includes simulations, mock-ups, and hands-on exercises to prepare them for the challenges of living and working in space.
